Janine Shepherd: A broken body isn’t a broken person

Jazz up dinner

Is your dinner kind plain? Jazz it up by putting crushed Doritos on top! Yum!

This is my first post from my phone. I really should have a category for posts about Doritos!!!

Part of keeping a positive attitude is loving everyone around us. At a population of 7 billion and growing, there are a lot of different people in this world with a lot of different personalities and interests.  No one is telling us we have to agree with what people are saying or how they are acting but we can certainly put effort into accepting and finding the positive within those things we do not seem to like or agree with.  I believe what a person looks like should have no effect what so ever on how we perceive who they are as a person. There are so many different age groups as well. From Infants to teen to adults to elderly and plenty in between. Embrace all ages, all personalities, all nationalities, all of the human race on this planet.

I understand that some instances would be hard to handle but we can! for example: (I am no expert)

A baby crying on a plane!

You are on a 3+ hour flight and right in front of you there is a baby crying the entire time. This one is easy. Put yourself in their shoes. Show empathy for the child and its parents. You were a baby once no matter if you cried a lot or were in this same situation but you were in fact a baby once, and chances are you will be having a child of your own some day as well. Next you ask, “well why are they bringing that baby on the plane?” We as the outside listener in the situation have no idea why the crying baby is on the plane. Don’t concern yourself with the noise, for all we know they could be rushing to see the last moments of another family members life, or their funeral.  There are so many reasons that a crying baby could be on a plane, he or she could just be plain scared. When you hear a crying child instead of being irritated consider yourself blessed. Bless to be in the presents of new life. That baby is just as scared of new things as we are but they have not learned how to accept or work out the things that bother them, so they are doing what they know. Crying is part of life and we do it all our life, accept it. When you hear a crying child just smile and take in life!

A Sassy teenager!

Unless you are a teenager reading this, we have all been in these shoes. No matter how we were brought up there is a certain time in our lives where we are gaining the feel of independence and we are smart and we know everything. We can do no wrong in our own eyes and we want more. Empathy again. I will not address this as a parent of a teen as I am not a parent (yet). In any case I do have nieces and nephews and plenty exposure to teens as a Leader in Scouts. It’s tough to not be irritated when they won’t do something you asked, or they do something you don’t want them to do. It is all part of the learning process of life. As a teen they are on top of the world, They have very few burdens of responsibility. They are more carefree then they will ever be in their entire lives. That feeling is intoxicating and powerful, we have all been there. So let he teens be happy,  and don’t let their sassiness get out of hand but understand where it is coming from. The thing that makes me smile the most is in Scouts. You can watch them start as young boys and grow in maturity, knowledge and spirit. being around this natural transition is amazing.

The “I am always right” or “the talker” Adult!

As an adult we are all deep into our own pursuing of life. relatively set in our ways. Let those people be right, and listen when those people talk. There is no use fighting it. We all have establish great independence at this point and everything on this planet can be perceived in many different ways. There should be no harm in stating your difference even if they don’t agree. Empathy plays here again, because you don’t agree with them either. Who is to say who is right. You can not change their mind but you can just except their point of view, hope they except yours and move on. We should all be able to freely share our thoughts and being the one able to smile in the end is the one that excepts being wrong, and listens to that talker. Love every word out of our human mouths

There are many different instances that I could write about but I would be here for days and in no way do my views have to be agreed upon by you as the reader. I am sure many of you can find something that typically irritates people or yourself and find good in it instead. Embrace diversity. We are all different, and we all have control of our own mind and our own thoughts. Choose to look at the brighter side of people and except their views.

On another note I had a thought the other day. There are a few things in life that I gave people crap about, like having a cell phone and texting all the time, but here I am today with one of the best Smart Phones out right no so addicted! The world around us is always changing and we are always changing. Sometimes things just line up. Always, I have said I don’t want kids, well driving in my car one day this wave of thoughts about  wanting kids slammed into my head. I literally almost pulled over, because I was beside myself. Now I think I want kids, or maybe one. Either way it is a brand new thought and it is a lesson in a lesson here, We are always changing. Embrace the change in our lives. Listen to ourselves more. We have so many positive things on our mind, don’t let the negative block them out. The more I free myself from negatives the more I am discovering about myself. The more open minded I have become in listening to others.

“Even the most …

“Even the most positive of us have down days. Life is not perfect for any one person, all we can do is go out and make the best of each day as they come. Pass each challenge as they are put upon us, and always be ready for the next one. If you can wake up with a smile and fall asleep with a smile, no matter what happens in between you can at least believe in yourself that it has been a good day.”

Information Infinity

I changed the title of this post and you will see why….the original title was ” Thanks- run goal-giving”

From time to time I would like to share personal stories on my blog as well. Right now there I have a lot of things happening in my life so there may be quite a few.

A personal goal of mine has been to do a benefit run. Upon meeting my new friend Amy this opportunity was presented to me and I certainly jumped on it. She invited me to run the Naperville (IL) Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving day. It did not take much thinking, I accepted it with the notion that I had a lot of work ahead of me to prepare.

Ok lets jump around a little here. In Junior High I ran Cross Country, and in my High School Sophomore year I ran sprints in track. Also from 3rd grade thru Freshman year I played soccer. From High School thru just a couple years ago my only exercise was practicing for backpacking trips in Scouts. I decided that I wanted to play soccer(indoor) again. I went to my first game and that was my realization that I was completely out of shape. I could not even make it thru the game. I started running outside to build my endurance, I was doing a run walk routine and for each game I could feel a little improvement.  A few games into the season I took a nasty extension fall. I tore my ACL and MCL in my left knee. I went to the doctor and physical therapy and to my luck I did not need surgery, the ACL was a partial tear and the MCL was healing itself nicely. About 4+ weeks later I wanted to get back in for the last couple games. The very first game back I over compensated for my knee and ended up spraining my ankle. I decided it was time to take a break again. I did nothing for a few years and to no surprise I was out of shape again.

A few months ago I started working out, no purpose then just to get healthier, and lose weight. Which I did! Then Amy presented me with the question as to if I wanted to do the 5k. Keeping in mind my past injuries I took the opportunity very serious. I stepped on the treadmill and so began my training for the 5k. I moved my work outside into the cold, and started running every morning at about 5am. This whole time my knee/ankle  has been fine. I was so excited with my progress. 2 days before the run I finally worked up to jogging the entire 3.1 miles, and my knee was very sore. NO WAY! This could not be happening, I am so close. I kept going, I took proper care of my knee while running an not running.

Its race day, Thanksgiving Day. The sun is out and the air is warming up. It is a perfect fall day for Amy, myself and 7,500 runners to take to the streets of Naperville for a 5k run. We stretched we waited we ran the whole thing, we finished. GOAL ACHIVED! What an amazing experience to be able to run and with so many people. Thank you again Amy, I look forward to the next one.

The next day (today) my friend Josh says to me, “that is a really cool number from your run”. My number was 4118. I responded with thanks and tried to guess what he meant. I said “ya Information 8”. He corrected me and said “Information Infinity”….4118.  Information infinity what an awesome observation. I have been receiving a lot of signs in my life lately. I am not looking for signs but I am keeping my mind wide open to receive any valuable information to my future. What do I take from this 4118 sign? Well there is an infinite amount of information out there to be discovered. Even as I write this message in the library (NO JOKE) I saw one of my old scout leaders Bruce, and flagged him over. Talked for a good hour he has given me such a plethora of information it was insane. He teaches classes about career transitions, He talked to me about revamping my Linked-In, he has a good resource for my baking hobby, he has given me a resource for my current search for an advertising job, and best of all he knows personally, someone that is 10 years into his career as a motivation speaker. He is going to connect me with him so I can hopefully set up a time to meet him. Every sign I have received in the past has been a huge eye opener and this 4118, information infinity, has proven yet again another profitable sign.

Be Grateful for your birthday

Be Grateful for your birthday

The Day you were born, the day this world was presented, your day of birth, YOUR BIRTHDAY!

Your birthday should be a great moment. It is not about gifts, dinner or drinks, it is about celebrating a whole year of time you have had to explore what this world has to offer. Many things can happen in a year of time but if you are not grateful for each day it is possible that nothing may seem to happen.  Your birthday is a time for reflection. What has happened in the past year,  what have you learned, and what you are grateful for? What have you accomplished in the past year and what have you learned from your failures? Maybe the most important thing to reflect upon is not your age but the age you feel. It is a great thing to feel young or younger as the years go by. The easiest way for that is staying healthy and having a positive attitude toward life.

Don’t Ignore your birthday. Every happy birthday greeting you receive let it travel through your ears and down to your heart and out thru the rest of your life! I am 32 standing at the cliffs of the rest of my life, and building the bridge to a new life. I am changing my career, listening to my health, and embracing a more positive attitude. Everything is going to be amazing because amazing is what I am reaching for. I reach for the best in everything I do, and it is something that all of us can easily do. You are never too young, you are never too old, and it is never too early or late, to feel great about yourself and be grateful for the world of opportunities around you.

Happy Birthday!
